Balenciaga’s Latest Invite Pays Homage To Couture Atelier Staff

A Balenciaga show invitation can arrive in many forms nowadays. From smashed iPhones and lost wallets, to the key and branded leather fob for Spring 2024. It's become apparent that no object is out of the question when it comes to a Demna Gvasalia summons. The label's Couture 2023 invitation, though, is certainly more in-keeping with the opulent theme than previous seasons: a golden, Balenciaga-engraved bracelet based inspired by the magnetic wrist pieces typically worn by atelier staff as home for loose pins and needles. "The Balenciaga Couture bracelet directly replicates the magnetic pin holder often worn by couture atelier staff. The functional object has long been used by couturiers, especially during fittings," reads a note accompanying the invitation. "This bracelet is non-magnetic, an homage to the tradition and craft involved in Balenciaga couture," it continues. "It is cast in brass and bronze with a gold finish and engraved on one side with the Balenciaga couture l..

First Look: Inside Kanye’s New YEEZY HQ

Kanye "Ye" West's YEEZY brand is going through a period of semi-dysfunction at the moment, as Ye's controversial new CEO and new YEEZY headquarters are getting situated in Los Angeles while Ye visits Japan. In fact, as first-look imagery of two new YEEZY spaces is suddenly revealed, everything YEEZY-related remains in a period of flux. Well, here's what we do know. First, a look at the purported YEEZY workspace set up in Los Angeles' Cornerstone Christian Church church, where Ye reportedly has a couple local seamstresses hand-stitching his new YEEZY clothes. Imagery of the YEEZY workshop — it's too small and weird to be called a factory — reveals racks of white clothes, seemingly nothing but T-shirts and pants. These shots were taken around the same time as the premiere of The Trouble With KanYe, a June 29 BBC documentary that explored the anti-Semitic tirades and white nationalists that Ye began platforming in late 2022. The rumored YEEZY sample garments visib..

You Can Actually Cop the Nike Go FlyEase on Sale Now

When the Nike Go FlyEase first dropped in February 2021, the sneaker community was rightfully shocked, confused, and immediately obsessed. Nike’s first-ever hands-free sneaker relies on a tensioner that wraps around the midsole to allow the wearer to slide the shoe on and off, making use of a sole unit that splits at the arch. The slip-on mechanism was originally designed to make life easier for those with disabilities, which made it all the more unethical when resellers instantly bought up all sizes and began selling pairs for upwards of $600 on the secondary market. Not only was this another frustrating reminder of the changed face of sneaker culture, but it also meant that buying a pair of Nike Go FlyEase was nigh-on impossible for the first year of its life. Fast-forward to the summer of 2022, though, and things have changed a lot. The Nike Go FlyEase is now readily available at Nike in a handful of colorways. And while the initial hype around the release has dwindled, it makes it ..

When Is It Time to Put Couture Week on Pause?

Haute Couture Week, the extra-ornamental cousin of Paris Fashion Week, is predicated upon resplendent runway shows artful enough to elicit dreamy introspection. However, Couture Week Fall/Winter 2023, held in Paris from July 3-6, is prompting a different kind of query. Specifically, as France turns out in droves to protest police brutality, one wonders whether Paris really needs a three-day extravaganza dedicated to fancy clothes for the ultra-rich at this very moment. Less than a century ago, couture clothing and luxury clothing were one and the same. Couture houses epitomized luxury, painstakingly producing made-to-measure couture garments for wealthy patrons. Yves Saint Laurent, Cristobal Balenciaga, Elsa Schiaparelli, Paul Poiret, and Jacques Doucet weren’t designers — they were couturiers and they wove wearable fantasies. What’s happening in Paris right now, however, is reality. On June 27, police shot Nahel Merzouk, a a 17-year-old second-generation North African immigrant, in th..

The ‘Barbie’ Movie Isn’t Out Yet, But Its 30-Plus Collabs Are

The Kool-Aid is pink, and everyone is chugging it. Since the first trailer for Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie released last December, Mattel and Warner Bros. have been working overtime, executing a marketing blitz that has flooded our feeds with Margot Robbie's fuchsia press tour 'fits, Ryan Gosling's "Ken"-ergy, Barbie movie poster memes, and a seemingly endless stream of collaborative merchandise collections encouraging movie-goers to live life in plastic (it's fantastic!). To date, over 15 brands looking to capitalize off of Barbie mania have entered licensing agreements with Mattel. There are Barbie-branded Halloween costumes, toothbrushes, roller skates, and cans of lemonade (pink, obviously). Mattel's decision to turn its product into a movie and, in turn, transform the movie into an even more expansive line of products fits nicely into the era of MerchTainment, a phenomenon that Highsnobiety's former editor-in-chief Thom Bettridge identified in 20..

In the World of Couture, Balenciaga Is Back

Balenciaga's Haute Couture 2023 collection served as a timely reminder of the genius of Demna Gvasalia after two remarkably subdued recent ready-to-wear presentations. In the wake of the well-documented ad scandal that plagued the house last year, a post-hiatus Balenciaga hasn't been quite the same. And, understandably so. That was until the house reignited its position in the world of opulence on July 5, with a 52nd Haute Couture presentation held inside Cristobal Balenciaga's Parisian salon. In the days leading up to the show, guests received a grandeur golden bracelet by way of invitation, a piece inspired by the magnetic wrist pieces traditionally worn by couture atelier staff. Such is the very nature of couture, the show was expected to be a much grander affair than we've seen of Balenciaga of late, although it would always prove tricky to top last season's star-studded soiree which saw Kim Kardashian, Dua Lipa, Bella Hadid, Naomi Campbell, and even Nicole..

ERL Is Riding The Leather Jacket Wave Like No Other

There’s something about leather jackets that instantly spices up any look. It’s been more than half a century since its popularization, and the motorbike jacket still takes part in everyone's closet. Most of them feature monochromatic colorways for style versatility. However, this ERL Leather Jacket will be the spotlight of any ‘fit. Since its launch in 2018, ERL has brought its Californian aesthetic to our wardrobes. Even the brand’s winter pieces pay tribute to Venice Beach landscapes. For example, for its iconic Sunset Puffer Jacket, Linnetz was inspired by California’s captivating sunsets. ERL's puffer jackets have gained such momentum, that even Bad Bunny wore a piece during his Coachella performance despite the extreme hot weather. You might not be wearing one of those puffy pieces this season, but this leather jacket can be a fun transitional option. This ERL Leather Jacket features ribbed-knit trims to make it more casual and comfortable. A head-turning surf graphic p..

Loewe Made the Best Coat of the Season, Let That Sink in

There aren’t many labels in the luxury sphere that have as much fun as Jonathan Anderson’s Loewe. The designer is an expert in bringing playful irreverence to classic forms, readying them for the absurd world that we live in. What’s the point in taking everything seriously? There’s no quicker way to make something fun and boring than to unnecessarily intellectualize it, so we’ll stop with the absurdism here. But, we’re not overstepping the mark by saying that the new Loewe Drain Hole Overcoat is a work of art. Whatever its meaning — if there even is one — this garment is, at its core, just a beautiful thing. The single-breasted overcoat is cut from gloriously heavy wool and features a hidden button placket to round out a traditionally minimal, understated aesthetic. For one side of the coat, that is. The other side is a whole different story. Drain holes like you’d find in the baths and sinks around your house form the eye-catching detailing that defines this coat. Rows of the metallic..

Sean Wotherspoon Wants You to DIY His adidas Orketro

Brand: adidas x Sean Wotherspoon Model: Orketro Buy: Online from the Highsnobiety Shop Release Date: July 7 Price: $175 Editor's notes: From doodling all over a pair of Gazelles to leaving dangling threads hanging from Superstars, Sean Wotherspoon's sneaker collaborations (both with adidas and other brands) have always been notable for their colorful finishes and eye-catching touches. With his latest release, a new take on adidas' 90s-inspired Orketro sneaker, things are a bit different though. This is Wotherspoon's most minimal sneaker collab to date. The shoe has a simple off-white look that comes from its undyed, unfinished canvas upper. This uncolored fabric has been used to make the shoe more sustainable as it skips the water-intensive dyeing process that often uses a bunch of chemicals. But there's nothing stopping you from dyeing the monochrome sneaker to create a personalized colorful version — using natural dyes without harmful chemicals, of course. In..

Drake’s Poetry Book Is 168 Pages of Corny IG Captions

Drake's new poetry book, Titles Ruin Everything, is what happens when someone is constantly told that they're more clever than they actually are. Across 168 pages of single-line text, Drake quips about women, sex, women, money, fake friends, and women. Ever heard a Drake song before? You've basically read the book! Lord Byron, he ain't. Instead, Drake's poetry book reads like if Barstool Sports commissioned E. E. Cummings for an anthology of pick-up lines, except less artful. It's Bushisms two decades later. Written with longtime songwriting partner Kenza Samir and published by century-old bookseller Phaidon, Titles Ruin Everything is supposedly both a prelude and tie-in to a forthcoming album, though things do not bode well if Titles Ruin Everything is indicative of what that album's quality. [Titles Ruin Everything's "provocative musings translate [Drake]'s wit and talent for wordplay into potent stanzas," said publisher Phaidon in a state..
